Social media for business, especially small business with limited resources seems to be the obvious choice when marketing their respective business online. Fortunately, there’s a new book to help small businesses figure out how to make the most of social media.
Social Persuasion by Robbin Block talks about a traditional marketing approach, the book includes exercises and cost-effective tools that can be put into practice immediately. It also includes an extensive glossary of marketing and social media terms.
When author Robbin Block is asked, ‘Should I be on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter?’ her qualified response is often, ‘None of the above’.
In an excerpt from the book, Robbin says, “targeted, niche sites are better for attracting people in the mood to make a purchase, because they’re looking for product-specific information. …Niche sites may not be as well known or attract the same numbers, but they’ll reach your audience in ways that a mainstream site can’t… . It’s a matter of quality over quantity.”
Small businesses and entrepreneurs should use social media as a way to enhance the presence of their business, create leads and build relationships. What many of them are finding out is that social media takes a significant amount of time to get results. Time is something few of us have a lot of. So targeted niche sites should have a sense of priority in our online marketing efforts.
So the question remains, how do I find a targeted niche? Well look to yourself or your company. What is it that you like about your company? What are you good at? What do you enjoy? On what subject or area are you the foremost authority? What are your strengths, and how can you leverage those strengths? What do you have to offer that is fairly unique?
Once you jot down all the answers to those few questions, you will see a few different niches jump out of the page at you. Gather the information to help you find a detailed profile of your target customer. There are a few things you can do after you have acquired your niche.
* Create and fine tune your brand, your name and image.
* Work on building a website/blog and filling it with information and content detailing your unique expertise and specialized services. Build credibility and explain how and why your the leading authority in this field.
* Create an online press release, sites like PRNewswire and Marketwire.com are good options to use, but I find that PRWeb Direct offers the best rates.
* Look into online services that promote your business, such as OrangeSoda, and Service Magic. Local Connex is a site that can connect you with online customers in your local area.
Even though target niche sites are better to attract people to make a purchase, social media sites must also be considered with any small business campaign as relationship building and connecting with friends, groups and people of influence in your niche market. You will definitely get leads and sales from facebook, linkedin, twitter, and meetup but you must offer value through those social media sites and those connections will buy from you in due time, this is a long haul approach but critical for the desired success you wish to obtain from online marketing.
